Card payments: account and readers

Help centre · In your shop

Taking cards in person, on the till and at trade shows. There is one account and one set of readers for the whole shop, so this is the one place they are set up. You reach it from Set up card payments on Tills, on the Card payments tab of Trade shows, or at the top of Settings ▸ Payment. Online card payments are Stripe, which stays on Settings ▸ Payment.

Provider

Only on plans with tills. Pick a Provider and press Save provider.

ProviderWhen to pick it
None (manual card)You have a card machine that isn't connected to the till. The till records the sale as paid by card; you take the payment on your own terminal. Perfectly valid.
SumUpThe till drives a SumUp reader directly — the amount is pushed to the reader, no re-typing and no mis-keyed totals.
SquareThe same, with a Square terminal.

A shop running trade shows without tills uses SumUp: saving the SumUp details below is all it takes.

SumUp

Merchant code and API key come from your SumUp dashboard. Leave the API key blank when editing later and the saved one is kept — it's never shown back to you, only its last four characters. Save SumUp does not just store the details, it tries them: you get "SumUp settings saved and verified" if they work, and the error SumUp gave if they do not, so a typo is caught here and not at the booth.

Pair a reader takes the code the SumUp reader displays and a name for it under Call it; press Pair.

Square

Only shown once Square is the provider. Location id comes from your Square dashboard; Access token and Webhook signature key are secrets and behave the same way — blank means "keep what's saved". The webhook key is what lets Square tell your till a payment completed, so a sale finalises by itself rather than the cashier waiting.

Card readers

A reader belongs to the shop, not to the credentials — so you can own more than one. Pair one above, or add one by hand under the table with a Label, the Provider and the Reader id if you already know its id, and press Add reader. Remove forgets one. The box above the table filters the readers as you type.

On plans with tills, each reader is pointed at one till from the table, or sent to one trade show from that show's Card reader tab, or left unassigned as a spare. That is the point of owning more than one: keep a second reader for the show bag and the counter never loses its card machine for a weekend.

If you do send the counter's own reader to a show, it comes off that till for the duration and goes back to the same till by itself when you close the show — you do not have to re-assign it on Monday. While it is away, an unassigned spare covers that till automatically.

A till with no reader assigned does not guess. It falls back to Take payment on the card machine, then confirm — the cashier keys the amount into the reader and presses Mark as paid. The one exception is a shop with a single unassigned reader sitting at that till's location, which is used automatically; the moment you own two, you have to say which is which.
