The blog editor listing articles with an edit pane

Field by field

FieldWhat to put
TitleThe headline.
ExcerptOne or two lines summarising the post — shown on the blog index and used as the page description if you leave SEO description blank.
ContentThe article itself, with formatting, links, lists and images.
Featured imageThe picture shown on the index and when the link is shared.
CategoryGroups posts — "News", "Events", "Strategy".
FeaturedFlags a post for wherever your theme highlights one.
SEO title / descriptionOptional overrides for search engines. Leave blank and they default to the title and excerpt.

The slug

The article's web address. It follows the title until you touch it, and stops following the moment you do — so a headline you tweak after publishing doesn't quietly move the page out from under anyone who linked to it.

Draft and preview

A post stays a draft until you tick Published and save. Preview live opens it as customers will see it — worth a look before publishing, especially if you've pasted from a word processor.

Unticking Published again takes it off the blog index and off its own address: the link stops being a page at all rather than staying quietly reachable. Use it for something published by mistake.

Saving

This editor is quiet when it works — a successful save simply puts the article back in the list on the left. If something is wrong you get a red message instead, so no message is the good outcome.
